so this was an epic fail of a blog so far. whoops?
i told myself i would start blogging once spring break was over (beginning of march)..and that didn't happen obviously. then i told myself that i would start once school got out, then once induction started, and then once institute started, and now here i am on the monday of the last week of institute and i'm finally getting at it. better late then never i suppose!
Reasons for why i'm deciding to blog:
1. i will want to remember all of this and what's happening in my life now when i'm old and wrinkled
2. i'm apparently worse than i thought at keeping in touch with friends..so what's better than a social media for them to stalk my life on?!
3. in the fall i will start teaching english to high schoolers (no idea where or what grade yet)..and i hate writing, i hate reading...and that is a problem. so hopefully this will help my writing skills :]
4. i don't know..i just refuse to have an odd number of reasons.
so what has been going on in the life of Ms. Ahokas? teach for america has totally consumed my life, that's what.
i am currently teaching an english class of 16-20 year olds. it's supposedly sophomore level stuff, but most of my students read on a 5th or 6th grade reading level. I'm in Tulsa, Oklahoma and teaching in McLain high school. i've been here for the past month and i have one week left before i start transitioning into my new life in Miami (305)! i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my students to the moon and back. every single one of them. i only have eight students so it isn't hard, but i truly mean it when i say that it has been such a pleasure to teach them and i'm going to be really sad to see them go. The reason why my students are taking summer school is because they all failed their EOI (end of instruction test) or because they failed the actual class by not coming, not turning in homework, or just straight up failing. my goal for my students is for them to all get a 70 or better in my class and for them to all pass the EOI with at least an 80%! i'll let you know if they do once this week is over..and as for the EOI i find out if they passed or not in october!
When i'm not teaching, i stay at the University of Tulsa dorms...i haven't had to share a bedroom since my freshman year of college and it's definitely taken some getting used to but i only have a week left so i guess i pretty much made it! i've met some pretty awesome people doing TFA and i've created some really crazy memories; I now fully understand why teachers tend to drink more coffee and more alcohol than most other professions. tulsa is a lot more fun than i anticipated it being :] there are amazing coffee shops, great restaurants, and fun bars to go to on the weekends.
i guess that's it for my first blog post! stephanie, if you are reading this i promise that i will try to post more!
:]
Teehee. I DID read this, and I love it! I really do hope you keep up the blog because I loved reading about your teaching endeavors just now :) You make me smile, Ms. Ahokas, and you just make me so proud :) I LOVE YOU MOM!
